Denmark's Largest Commercial Port Increases Market Share in a Challenging Year
2023 presented numerous challenges in the global markets. These challenges also had an impact at the Port of Aarhus, resulting in a decrease on the turnover of goods through the port, falling short of the record high volumes in 2022. Despite these conditions, Port of Aarhus, along with the business community, expanded its market share, securing 73% of the total Danish container market.
"Last year was marked by global unrest, which affected the global economy. When there is a slowdown in the global economy, we feel it too. We did not expect to reach the same volume of goods as in 2022. I am therefore pleased with this year's result, where we, together with our business partners, have ensured a reasonable turnover that has enabled us to invest significantly in the ports infrastructure and equipment, and at the same time, we have managed to increase our market share of the Danish container market," said Thomas Haber Borch, CEO of the Port of Aarhus.
During 2023, the Port handled 10,151,097 tons of goods, marking a 24% increase over the past 10 years. This underscores the growth and operational efficiency at the Port of Aarhus, alongside the business community, throughout the last decade.
"The board is pleased that Port of Aarhus, together with the local business community, has managed to increase the market share within the container sector in a challenging year. Therefore, the board is satisfied with this year's results, and we are equally as pleased with the significant infrastructural and environmental investments initiated this year. They contribute to the continuous development and progress benefitting both the climate and jobs in Aarhus and all of Denmark," said Jacob Bundsgaard, Chairman of the Board of Port of Aarhus.
Port of Aarhus ends the year with an equity of DKK 2.466 billion kroner and a liquidity close to DKK 595 million.
Important Steps Towards CO2 Neutrality by 2030
Port of Aarhus aims to be CO2 neutral by 2030. In 2023, the port took further steps in this direction and achieved a significant reduction in CO2 emissions by 19% compared to 2022.
When you are Denmark's largest commercial port, you have a special responsibility. We want to lead in the green transition—not just with ambitious goals, but with concrete action. Therefore, during the year, we invested significantly in measures that will bring us closer to CO2 neutrality by 2030 and initiatives that make a difference to the local environment
— said Thomas Haber Borch.
In 2023, the Port of Aarhus made danish history with Denmark’s first shore power facility for cruise ships and the introduction of the country’s first electric mooring vehicle.
