The maiden voyage of the world's first methanol cruise ship went to Aarhus
When Mein Schiff 7 docked at the cruise dock in Aarhus this week, it was in many ways a slightly different cruise visit.
First of all, it is the largest cruise ship to have entered the cruise dock. The quay is 319 metres long and Mein Schiff 7 stretches for 316 metres. It should not have been much longer before it had to be sailed into the Omniterminal instead.
Secondly, the arrival in Aarhus was the ship's first call outside its home port in Germany. Built in Finland, the ship was delivered to TUI Cruises just two days before it docked in the City of Smiles.
I am glad that the new ship's first voyage went to the Port of Aarhus. The ship is really beautiful and I hope we will see it many times in the future,
- says Morten Kusk, Commercial Manager at the Port of Aarhus.
But there is one last thing that makes the ship special. Mein Schiff 7 is the first cruise ship in the world designed to run on methanol.
It is currently running on diesel until the final parts for the methanol engine are finished, but the expectation is that from 2026 it will ditch the fossil fuel.
I am very proud to be the captain of the most environmentally friendly ship in our fleet. We have a responsibility together with the ports to contribute to a better future,
- says Omar Caruana, who is the captain of the new ship.
Even though the final details were still being completed during the maiden voyage to Aarhus, the ship is looking good.
The expectation is that it will be completely finished and ready with all facilities operational before it visits the Port of Aarhus again.
And it already does so on Monday, June 17.
